Stool

It was covered with layers and layers of white paint. First we stripped it all with caustic soda in order to remove the paint. Although the caustic soda removed most of the paint, some paint was left in the turnings. I therefore used nitromos to remove the remainder of the paint. Following this I washed the stool with common washing soda in order to neutralize it. Next I sanded it well because the caustic soda had brought the grain up. I then stained it with oak stain, sanded it lightly and gave it a coat of button polish to seal the colour. Finally, I gave the stool two coats of satin matt spray. To complete the operation I gave the renovated stool a coat of wax.

Lamp

I stripped this lamp stand which was black.

I then bleached it and re-polished it to a Ercol natural colour by using yellow and white powder colour, mixed with meths and clear white polish.

I next rubbered it with white polish and finished it with spray.

Victorian Hall Stand

Stand Before

We made the decision to refinish the whole piece. The following outlines the process towards this.

  1. Strip the piece with nitromose
  2. Thoroughly neutralize the piece with common washing soda.
  3. Sand the whole piece thoroughly, repairing any damaged pieces.
  4. Coat up with sanding sealer.
  5. Lightly de-nib the whole piece.
  6. Apply a thin coat of 4lb button polish thinned down on a ratio of 1:3.
  7. Fade the whole piece with a rubber and button polish

Stand After
  1. Colour out any repairs, and with a brush mix some powder colours with some button polish and tone the piece into match any light areas so that all light and dark areas match.
  2. Rubber the whole piece several tiles de-nibbing with some worn sand paper until satisfied with the finish.
  3. Leave for at least 48 hours to enable the polish to thoroughly harden and then wire and wax using some 0000 wire wool and Georgian mahogany wax, giving the whole piece an antique finish buffing off with a soft cloth.
